It is extremely rare for manufacturers to use real silk to produce artificial plants due to the high cost and flimsy nature of the material. Products are typically made of polyester, polymers, and plastics. The majority are made of polyester. Polyester is a man-made material used to imitate silk. Rubber or plastic are used when the final product more closely resembles the plant in nature and/or the plant is designed to survive the elements. For example, all of the calla lilies produced by Nearly Natural are made of silicon rubber, and most of their topiaries are made of plastic.
