In Senegal, recycling has become an industry that sustains entire communities. At one time, rubbish would simply accumulate, especially in the major cities. Now, local residents ensure everything that can be recycled is recycled. Cans, plastic bags, tires, newspaper, and other materials are re-purposed. Some of these items are re-crafted into functional works of art for the home.
Soweto Village is a small workshop of artisans in downtown Dakar. There, Mbeye and Jacque create art from recycled bottle caps, aluminum, and tin. Coffee, tomato, sardine, pop, and beer cans are often used. Arabic, French, English, and Wolof phrases adorn the boldly colored advertising, making each item a one-of-a-kind conversation piece.
